The Yellow-eyed Penguin is the rarest penguin in the world and they are only found in New Zealand.

They are classed as globally endangered and in New Zealand they are classed as nationally endangered.

There are two district populations, the northern breed can be found on the south-east coast of the South Island (Canterbury, Otago and Southland), the southern breed can be found on sub-Antarctic islands of Auckland and Campbell Islands.
